Social and Environmental Mobilization in the Arctic: Exploring the Discursive Strategies of the Gwich'in People

This thesis explores the discursive practices of the Gwich'in tribe in Alaska, specifically in the context of the environmental conflict over the proposed oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an area they have inhabited for generations. Over the years, the tribe has been actively engaged in political activism to protect the Refuge from oil development, with a specific focus on safeguarding the Porcupine Caribou herd that inhabits the area. Drawing upon the theoretical framework of political ecology, the thesis posits that the core of this conflict lies in differing ontologies of nature rather than divergent interests. To address this research problem, the thesis investigates the discursive strategies employed by the Gwich'in and their evolution, utilizing critical discourse analysis guided by Van Dijk's sociocognitive approach. By analyzing testimonies given by Gwich'in speakers before the US Congress between 2003 and 2019, the research identifies four key discursive strategies utilized by the Gwich'in. A Loving Home for Every Animal: Civic Engagement of Founders of Dog and Cat Shelters

This diploma thesis presents the conclusions of a qualitative research that dealt with the civic engagement of female founders of private shelters for dogs and cats. The topic is grasped on the basis of the theory of social movements and with the help of models bridging the opposition of volunteerism and activism. At the same time, the interpretation of the results of the thematic analysis relies on the concept of zoopolis, which presents citizenship as a category applicable to human-animal relations. The founders of private shelters approach the animals in their care as unmistakable individuals, beings with personhood and actors who can be and are invited to participate in decisions affecting their lives.

Content Analysis of the presentation of Black Lives Matter Movement in Czech media

The Bachelor's thesis on the topic of Content Analysis of the presentation of Black Lives Matter movement in Czech media aims to construct an image of the Black Lives Matter movement based on two selected Czech media using qualitative content analysis. The chosen media are the on-line versions of the outlets Respekt and Echo, which were selected based on their political attitude and the fact that they are not solely news media, but authors add their own opinion and view. The studied sample consists of 38 articles published in the chosen media during 2020 and 2021 and is analysed based on grounded theory and a brief discourse analysis based on Allan Bell. The paper finds that the image of the movement differs between the two media outlets. Respekt's attitude toward the movement is consistent, the authors present it as a non- hierarchical protest movement and use neutral rhetoric for further description. Based on broader context (such as the overall tone of the articles or the choice of people that were interviewed on the topic), it is certain that Respekt supports the movement. In the case of Echo24.cz, an ambiguity in the overall attitude towards the movement can be seen which does not help create a clear image of BLM. Cycling advocates: reinventing politics in the era of late modernity

Cycling advocacy has taken a form of a popular worldwide social movement in the beginning of the 21st century. Cyclists demand not only improved conditions for cycling, but also a reform in the way the city is being run in order to be "livable" and saturated with "quality public spaces". This dissertation attempts to put the phenomenon in the context of the theory of risk society and it attempts to incorporate impulses from the theoretical tradition of ANT. The cycling controversy is being read as a re-invention of politics in urban arenas. What is political about the bicycle? More than it may seem. The bicycle has endured a long trajectory of political appropriation by various groups in order to arrive at a point where it began to be conceived as the default starting point of the critique of automobility and Western modernity. As a consequence the bicycle emerges as a loaded political symbol that is being appropriated by cycling advocates in order to problematize the alienated city colonized by cars, appropriated by business interests and neglected by the political representation. Sociological interpretation of hippies movement

My bachelor thesis explores the hippie movement, which emerged in the middle of the sixties in the United States of America. The theoretical framework consists of sociological concepts of culture, subculture, youth and youth subcultures, communities, communes and social movements. The hippie movement was young people's response to middle class consumerism, which preferred material prosperity to moral and cultural values. The American transcendentalist movement and the Beat Generation can be considered its intellectual precursor. The movement's main characteristic was rejection of middle class values. Therefore, some authors have called it a counterculture. Hippies gave up studies and tangible assets. Typical for them was lack of confidence in the future, interest in oriental philosophy and religion, close relationship to nature, specific clothing style, living in communes and the use of drugs, especially LSD. The movement dissipated at the end of the sixties. Its influence is still evident in the effort to fight for human rights, peace, free network, but also in music and clothing. LGBT Movement in the Czech Republic from an Activist Point of View

The thesis deals with issues of LGBT movement in the Czech Republic in the context of the ongoing campaign "We are fair" for equal marriage. The intention was to try to find out on the basis of in-depth semi-structured interviews with LGBT activists how these activists perceive the status of sexual minorities in the Czech Republic and the related situation of the Czech LGBT movement with regard to its emancipatory potential. It turned out that the activists sensitively perceived the limits of the conditionality of the tolerance of Czech society and that they were aware of the changes in the social and political context in relation to minorities. However, particular minorities are not perceived in the same way by the society, and according to activists, LGBT rights can even be a tool for legitimizing aversion to other minorities, especially religious or ethnic minorities. On the level of reflection on the ongoiong campaign's strategies, activists put the emphasis on political lobbying for equal marriage, with the support of community mobilization and the formation of collective identity defined by the requirement of equal marriage. Activists on the Road to the Zapatista Territory

Thesis "Activists on the Road to Zapatista Territory" gives a resonance of actual results of my research among activists in Chiapas and Germany with contemporary theories. Based in theories of globalization and social movement and in dialogue with fieldwork data, it elaborates proper analytical concepts. These concepts enable to study journeys of activists to the Zapatista territory in Mexican state of Chiapas. Thesis aims to follow concepts of neo- zapatistas networks, which emerged around indigenous Zapatists and spread all over the World. Middle-Class activists from Germany enter these networks while travelling to Chiapas. Thesis scrutinize the nature of six months' journeys of activists and especially focus on transformation of so-called Imaginative knowledge of the World to Experienced knowledge of the World in the context of exoticism, poverty and Zapatista resistence.
